Update News

January 8, 2021 Update

Dear Parishioners,

This Sunday, we are liturgically ending the Christmas season with the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord.  During this period we not only celebrated the joyful birth of Jesus and the events following His birth, but also tried to show and share the love He brought into the world with others.  An example of this was our Share Christmas donation of $8,235 to The Missionaries of Charity. These funds will support their mission of serving the needy in the East Downtown area.  This was acknowledged by the Sisters with a beautiful card and letter thanking our parishioners for their generosity and ongoing support.

January 14th will be the last day for the collection of calendars and Christmas cards. Through the Prison Ministry, these calendars and cards will be shared with the inmates in local correctional facilities.

Until further notice, our Confession schedule will be:  Tuesdays from 10:00 am till 10:30 am; Thursdays from 3.00 till 3.30 pm and Saturdays from 4.00 pm till 4.45 pm.

Receiving of the Eucharist:  Holy Communion will continue to be distributed on Sundays between 11:00 am to 12 noon.  You must REGISTER for this.  Please go to our Parish Website at holycross.rcav.org and click on “Communion Registration”.  Carefully read the procedures for preparation and registration.

In this new year of 2021, let us go forward with a positive outlook, despite the restrictions we are all experiencing with Covid-19.

New Year’s Message Dec 29 2020

Dear Parishioners,

The receiving of Communion outside of the celebration of the Mass and on an individual basis has been going pretty well.  Individuals and families will be able to receive Holy Communion on New Year`s Day and every Sunday. Please register on our parish website https://holycross.rcav.org

You may pick up your Sunday collection envelopes in the church lobby Monday – Friday (except statutory holidays) between 9.00 am – 4.00 pm.  Please enter the Church by the side door and pick up your envelopes in the lobby.

You can still purchase the 2021 Sunday missals for $3 during our regular office hours.

On behalf of Fr. Thomas and myself, I want to wish you lots of blessings and all the best for the New Year! Yes, there is a great deal of distress, concern, and suffering in these challenging times. However, let us not lose confidence in the Lord and His leadership. May the defining characteristics of the Holy Cross Community be trust, confidence, and hope! Happy New Year!

Christmas Message – 2020

Dear Parishioners,

Memories of Christmas past…what are those for you?  Preparing this Christmas message, my mind wandered back to my childhood, where I spent many a happy Christmas with family and friends in Poland.  It is filled with so many memories and so many traditions that to me would never change – it would always be the same, like baking cookies with my Mom and siblings, and on Christmas Eve, gathering with my family at my Grandparents’ house to sing Christmas Carols.

Well, as we know time changes everything – we grow up and our lives take different paths, even leading us to different parts of the world. This year is an exception, because it doesn’t matter who we are or where we are, we are all experiencing Covid-19.  Our lives have been turned upside down and we can’t help but feel saddened, distressed and very disappointed.

However, for you and me let us remember what the unchanging denominator of our belief is based on…the newborn baby Jesus lying in the manger.  This “memory and tradition” NEVER changes!  Let us find comfort in the fact that God cares about us.

Even though this Christmas may not be as joyful as in past years, we must recall that God gives us the strength and courage to get through these challenging times.  Because, in the person of the baby born in Bethlehem two thousand years ago, God promises us that it will get better.  And with God’s help, we can be people who recover from whatever loss we have experienced this year in order to help others find hope and peace and even joy.  Just as the angels said these words to the shepherds, so we should listen to them today: “Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all people; to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

On behalf of Fr. Tomas and myself, I wish you and your loved ones hope, peace and joy this Christmas and that your Christmas 2020 will be truly merry and blessed for you!

Fr. Chris Pastuszka, SDS

P.S. On Christmas Eve, we will livestream the Holy Mass from our church as usual at 5.00 pm. Also, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day the church will be open for Holy Communion and/or brief adoration of Baby Jesus at the Nativity Scene. Please register at https://holycross.rcav.org/communion-registration/

Parish Office Christmas Closures:  The office is closed Friday December 25th (Christmas Day) and Monday December 28th.

December 17, 2020 Update

Receiving of the Holy Eucharist

Last weekend we introduced the receiving of Communion outside of the celebration of the Mass and on an individual basis.  After evaluating the procedures and the interest shown, we will continue with this keeping in mind the following:

Individuals and families will be able to receive Holy Communion between 11.00 am and 12:00 noon on Sundays.

Reception of Communion is open to those who either watched Holy Mass online OR did a spiritual preparation for Holy Communion on their own.

  • Here is the link to a Spiritual Guide on how to prepare yourself:  https://holycross.rcav.org/private-preparation-to-receive-holy-communion/
  • You must register online for one time slot in the same way as you registered to attend Mass in the last few months. Here is the link to register https://reopen.church/r/UOU7Tw6s
  • Please, park in the parish parking lot (NOT on the street) and stay in your vehicle until an usher comes and directs you into the church.
  • Only one person or one family (the same bubble) can enter the church at the same time.
  • Upon entering the building, sanitize your hands and wear a mask. Please proceed to a priest station for Holy Communion.
  • After you receive, please do not congregate but immediately leave the church and return to your vehicle where you can do your personal prayer of thanksgiving.

Share Christmas

This week we finalized our annual Share Christmas Campaign.  Even though we were not able to collect all the food items as in the past, we received $8,135 in monetary donations, 26 frozen turkeys and 320 pairs of warm socks.  These donations were delivered to the religious sisters living in the downtown eastside, who serve the needy throughout our Archdiocese.  Also, the Knights of Columbus and some individual parishioners prepared food hampers that were shared with families in need in our parish area.  Thank you all very much for your generosity!

Culture of Life Baby Shower

Please save up your new, or gently used, infant wear – up to 2 years of age; diapers –  sizes 3, 4 & 5), maternity clothes and supplies (except furniture, car seats, strollers & big toys) for our collection at the end of January (details to be announced), for pregnant women and new mothers in distress.  This event is sponsored by Birthright, the Crisis Pregnancy Centre of Vancouver and the Knights of Columbus.

Calendars and Sunday Missals

2021 Calendars are available in English and Italian for pick up in the Parish Office and are free of charge.  They are given to us by Bell & Burnaby Funeral Home and Kearney Funeral Home for distribution to our parishioners.

Sunday Missals for 2021 are also available in the Parish Office at a cost of $3.00 each.

December 11, 2020 Update

Day of Mercy  Saturday December 12, 2020

Archbishop Miller has set aside Saturday, December 12th as a dedicated Day of Mercy in the Archdiocese of Vancouver. The purpose of this day is to allow Catholics to recognize the need for, and availability of, the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Advent. This particular day will see vast opportunities throughout the Archdiocese for people to get to confession. You can find confession times in all parishes in the Archdiocese at https://rcav.org/christmas/day-of-mercy

On this day, confession times at Holy Cross will be:

9:30 am – 10:15 am
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
4:00 pm – 4:45 pm

Please come to the church and wait in front of the Children’s Room/Adoration Chapel, remembering to always maintain the required social distancing from one another. .  Masks are mandatory.

Receiving the Holy Eucharist

Archbishop Michael Miller has given permission for the simple reception of Holy Communion outside of the Mass as long as it follows the new BC Health Order and safety guidelines.

At this time, this is a one-time event for Sunday Dec. 13th.  We will evaluate the need for this event and the procedures after this weekend.

  • Communion is open to those who either watched Holy Mass online OR did a spiritual preparation for Holy Communion on their own.
  • You must register online for the particular time slot in the same manner as we did for attending Mass in the last few months. Here is the link https://reopen.church/r/UOU7Tw6s
  • Only one person or one family (the same bubble) can enter the church at the same time. Upon entering the church, sanitize your hands and wear a mask. Please proceed to a priest station for Holy Communion.
  • Please leave immediately by another door and go back to your car. You can make your thanksgiving in your car or back at home. You will not be able to stay in the church for a personal prayer as we are not allowed to have groups in church. This will be a simple in and out visit to the Church.

December 4, 2020 Update

Dear Parishioners,

Last Sunday was the beginning of the Season of Advent and, as is traditionally done in the Catholic Church, an Advent Wreath, with 4 candles, is placed in the front or side of the altar, where it remains for the next 4 weeks.  (I realize it was not that visible while you were watching the livestreamed Mass but it will be now).  Each week a candle will be lit. This past Saturday, we lit the first candle, which is known as the “prophecy candle“.  It assures us we can have “hope” that God will fulfill the prophecies declared in the Old Testament about Jesus.  In this day and age when we are growing so tired of the pandemic and getting discouraged and anxious, we can also “hope” that the prophecies about Jesus’ second arrival to earth will also be fulfilled in our lives.

Some of you might be interested in getting the new Sunday missals. They have arrived this week and can be purchased in our parish office for $3 each.

Also some parishioners asked about the “Little Books”. We are not selling them this year.  However, they can be ordered directly from the website at littlebooks.org. They are available in paper and eBook formats.  You can also get all the seasonal books on the Little Books app available for iOS and Android devices. To learn more about the app, go to littlebooks.org/app

We have been notified that there is a request from the Prison Ministry to collect Christmas cards and calendars.  Since we won’t know until Monday, December 7th if churches will be allowed to celebrate Mass again with a congregation present, we will temporarily put the decorated boxes for these items in the parish office.

If you wish to donate red poinsettias to decorate our church for Christmas, you may drop them off at the parish office by Friday, December 18.  Monetary donations for this purpose will also be accepted.

Fr. Chris

November 27, 2020 Update

Dear Parishioners,

I would like to give you an update on our Project Advance Campaign.  Our Archdiocesan goal is $31,000 and to date we have collected $87,889.  This means that $56,889 will stay at Holy Cross.  As you can well imagine, our parish has lost a significant percent of income due to lower collections, as well as not being able to hold our Annual Golf Tournament, which is one of our major fundraisers.  We hope that through Project Advance we will be able to recover some of these funds and cover some costs of the upgrades we did.  For example, we purchased equipment to allow livestreaming of the weekly Sunday Mass enabling you to “attend and participate in the celebration; in the rectory we replaced some windows, sinks and upgraded the boiler, in the priest’s office we put in soundproofing and a glass door to improve confidentiality and meet safe environment requirements; and in the church basement entrances we replaced both metal doors and the door handles.

Thank you very much to all who already supported us with their Project Advance contribution. For those of you who would like to be part of this Campaign you can still make a contribution.  Please, remember that the deadline to get a 2020 tax receipt is December 31, 2020

In last weeks’ update, I made a mistake in the Confession times. The correct schedule is:  Tuesdays from 10:00 am till 11:00 am; Thursdays from 3.00 till 4.00 pm and Saturdays from 4.00 pm till 4.45 pm.

Also, please be advised that our 2021 Sunday Missals have not yet arrived.  The company delivering them has some issues with the printer.  We hope to have them in the beginning of December.  I will keep you posted.

At this time, Fr. Tomasz and I would like to wish you and your families a most blessed Advent.  May this season remind us that the Lord is coming to us no matter what is happening around us.  May this knowledge be the source of our unquestionable hope, especially in these trying times of dealing with Covid-19.

Fr. Chris Pastuszka, SDS

Suspension of Holy Mass celebrated in Public (November 20, 2020)

Dear Parishioners,

As ordered by Dr. Bonnie Henry and confirmed by the Archbishop of Vancouver, J. Michael Miller, ALL MASSES, whether Sunday or weekday, beginning on Friday, November 20 and until further notice, are to be celebrated without a public congregation.  This directive also applies to other liturgical services as well as social activities and gatherings held in church facilities.

It is important to note that Funerals, Weddings and Baptisms may still be performed, but with restrictions on the number of attendees: “Funerals, weddings and baptisms may proceed with a limited number of people and a COVID-19 Safety Plan in place”.  A maximum of 10 people can be in attendance –  including the officiant.  Receptions associated with funerals, weddings or baptisms are not allowed at any location.

Since the Masses and other activities in all parishes of our Archdiocese have been cancelled, Fr. Tomas and I want to assure you that we will be available for you as follows:

Live Stream Mass:  As usual our Saturday 5.00 website will be available on our parish website: holycross.rcav.org

Mass Intentions:  Fr. Tomas and I are offering Masses every day in our parish church for the intentions that you have requested.

Confessions:  Fr. Tomas will be available for Confessions on Tuesdays from 10:00 am till 11:00 am; Thursdays from 3.00 till 4.00 pm and Saturdays from 4.00 pm till 4.45 pm.  Please come to the church and wait in front of the crying room/adoration chapel, remembering to always maintain the required social distancing from one another.  I, too, will be available for confessions – by appointment only.  You can email me at chris1978Sds@hotmail.com or call me at 604 299 3814 ext.3.

Private prayer and adoration:  Monday – Friday the church will remain open from 10 am to 4 pm to allow a limited number of people to be in the Church at one time.  Please ensure the following:  1) Always make sure that you follow and are mindful of the social distancing regulations.  2) Always leave a distance of two pews behind and in front of someone that has already been seated.  3) Always sanitize your hands before entering the church.   4) Also, never go into the sacristy or sanctuary.  This may sound harsh, but it is necessary to ensure the safety of Fr. Tomas and myself.  5) The Adoration Chapel will also be open with a limit of 2 people at one time.

PLEASE NOTE:  Whether you come for Confession or private prayer in the church – masks are mandatory.

Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation! We will continue to keep you and your families in our daily prayers.

God Bless,
Fr. Chris Pastuszka, SDS

Update November 20, 2020

Dear Parishioners,

Once again, our project for helping the “Homeless”, was a great success.  The generous response shown by our Parish community and others proved to be most gratifying.  The recipients were very thankful to receive your clean items that were in good reusable condition! These donations were delivered to two Lookout Homeless Shelters:  Belkin House (a 24 hr homeless shelter for women with children), and the Gathering Place (a drop-in community center for the homeless with hrs from 10 am – 8 pm daily).  For good measure, almost all of the new items received were donated to the Door is Open (with service hrs from 9 am – 12 pm weekdays) in the Downtown Eastside.  One can only imagine how appreciative these people were to receive these “gifts” now that the colder weather is settling in.  Thank You!  A special acknowledgment to a parishioner for providing the vans, the clear bags, an assistant, and for being a great help on delivery day.

As mentioned in last week’s Update, we will be running our annual “Share Christmas” program ONLY UNTIL DECEMBER 06.  Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we are requesting only cash donations (no cheques).  If you would like to help the Sisters assisting the homeless in the Eastside Downtown area, please place your donation in an envelope clearly marked “Share Christmas” and kindly deposit it in the offertory basket in the vestibule of the church before Mass begins.  If you are unable to attend a Sunday Mass, or a morning Mass, you can certainly come to the Parish Office and leave it there.

I would like to remind you that our parish has purchased a 1 year subscription to Formed.org that will help nourish your spiritual needs.  Formed.org is essentially a Netflix for Catholics.  It is run by the Augustine Institute and provides videos, books and audio talks for children, teens and adults. There is also a faith formation series.  All parishioners will have free unlimited access to this program. I  hope with our current situation, COVID-19, many individuals that are stuck at home and watching Netflix or other streaming services will take advantage of this service as an alternative containing Catholic content.

Steps to sign up to Formed.org

  • Go to formed.org/signup
  • Choose “I belong to a Parish or Organization”
  • Write Holy Cross Burnaby
  • Select our parish (make sure it is 1450 Delta Ave, Burnaby)
  • Register with your name and email address
  • Check that email account for a link to begin using FORMED

Please. . .let us all try to stay safe and healthy, by following and maintaining guidelines pertaining to COVID-19.  Let us remain positive and try not to lose faith!

God Bless,
Fr. Chris Pastuszka, SDS
