Share Christmas

Share Christmas

The Share Christmas Program started at Holy Cross in the early nineties under the name “The Giving Tree”. Parishioners took cards off a Christmas tree and returned gifts and food items for Christmas baskets for donation to the Burnaby Christmas Bureau.

In 1993, the name was changed to “Share Christmas” to reflect the opportunity for Holy Cross parishioners to join together to share God’s blessings. Parishioners volunteer their time and resources to collect a large quantity of food items to share with neighbors in need. A few hampers are prepared for families in our parish, but the bulk is delivered to Sisters in our diocese who serve the needy.

On the first Sunday of Advent, parishioners choose at least one of the many cards decorating the “Share Christmas” tree and each card denotes a particular food item such as tuna or peanut butter. The parishioner purchases approximately $25.00 worth of the corresponding food item, and then returns their donation to the school gym the following weekend, the second Sunday of Advent. In the afternoon, more than twenty volunteers begin loading the truck and deliver the donations to the Sisters.

The program involves the creative cooperation of our Holy Cross school community, other groups in the parish, and hundreds of volunteers from every age group. It is a small way for our parish family to show love for our neighbors.
