EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION FOR CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY (JUNE 19)
Holy Cross is be participating in a Diocesan Eucharistic Procession on Sunday, June 19, the feast day of Corpus Christi. Archbishop Michael Miller has encouraged all 77 parishes in the Vancouver Archdiocese to participate in this sacred event to promote devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, foster thanksgiving for the end of the pandemic, strengthen the hope of all the Faithful and create the fruit of reconciliation during the Papal visitation to Canada in July.

Archbishop Miller specifically encouraged the CWL, the Knights of Columbus, and the children of this year’s First Communion classes to lead the procession, followed by the rest of the congregation, including altar servers and a cantor who will lead us in songs of praise and thanksgiving. Holy Cross is blessed to be one of many parishes involved in this great Eucharistic event.

We will start this special day of prayer at 3:00 p.m. in the church by reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet. We will then process around the perimeter of the church and school grounds. We will finish in the church with Benediction. The entire event should take approximately one hour. Finally, all the participants are invited to share fellowship and refreshments in the gym provided by the Holy Cross C.W.L.

Please come and join us as we worship the Eucharistic Jesus. Celebrate with fellow parishioners and Catholics throughout the Archdiocese, singing and praying together, just as millions of others around the world have done before us throughout the years.

A plenary indulgence is available for the faithful who participate in a Eucharistic Procession on the Feast of Corpus Christi.

July Parish Retreat: Nine Days to Strengthen Your Faith
Would you like to strengthen your faith?  Join us for a simple 9 day retreat from July 4-8 and July 11-14.  Faith places us in real contact with God. Faith is our strength as Christians, because it teaches us to rely on Him in all things. Often lived most fervently when experiencing spiritual desolation, faith bears the fruit of peace, hope, and love. Using Fr. Jacques Philippe’s book, we will take nine days together with the parish community to meditate on your faith. Learn how to deepen and strengthen it, so that through both times of ease and times of burden, your faith can keep you focused on God, as he faithfully keeps his focus on you.

We will start with morning Mass, followed by a small group discussion in the music room in the basement (coffee/tea/snacks will be provided). Please register with Dorothy Demare at dorothydemare@gmail.com by June 12, 2022 to ensure that you get your copy of the book (about $17).

Update April 29, 2022

Project Advance
Every year, through Project Advance – together – we support a wide range of ministries that help others in our Archdiocesan community; i.e. building of catholic schools to provide catholic education; out-reach programs; Youth Ministry, etc.

Each parish, in the Archdiocese of Vancouver, is given a monetary goal in which to support these many Ministries. If and when a parish has met their allotted goal, they are given an “incentive”. Anything OVER this goal, the parish is allowed to keep and to use toward their own benefit and needs.  This year our Archdiocesan goal is $56,400. Every penny collected over this amount will stay within Holy Cross Parish and go towards the following:
· Replacing the windows in the sacristy (approximately $10,000)

· Installation of an EV charging station (approximately $8,000)

· Rebuilding or seismic upgrade of our elementary school.
Our Project Advance Volunteers will be at each mass for the next two weekends to facilitate the process. You can also go online to give at www.projectadvance.ca and designate our parish as the recipient – it is very easy to do.

To watch the Project Advance video, please use this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHJdJ4E_iE8

Please consider becoming a contributing member of Project Advance. I ask that you give willingly and from the heart. Remember… no gift is too small. Together, let us build our Parish Community…not only for today, but for all the tomorrows.

Update April 22, 2022

UKRAINIAN REFUGEES

The Ukrainian refugees that we are sponsoring are living in two apartments in Poland.

Two women with their children live in the first apartment.  Both of them have already found some work in the area.  They continue making and selling pierogis as was mentioned in our previous update.  They also tried signing up for Polish classes; however, they were unsuccessful due to the program filling up very quickly. Their children have started school, but they need to learn Polish first and then, after some evaluation, they will be assigned and placed into appropriate grades.  It has been quite a traumatic experience for these children and their families.  Apparently, the youngest boy cried for two days but is doing much better now.

A woman and her teenage live in the second apartment, which is much smaller. They are both from Mariupol, a city that has been severely devastated by the Russian invasion.  Their house was completely ruined and burnt.  The husband and father has recently enlisted for the Ukrainian army.  The woman is now going through a serious mental breakdown. The son, however, seems to be doing OK.

Please keep all of them in your prayers.

DIVINE MERCY MASS FRIDAY APRIL 22, 2022

There will be no Divine Mercy Mass this Friday (April 22) as it is Confirmation for our Grade 7 and PREP students.

Divine Mercy SUNDAY APRIL 24

The Divine Mercy Sunday Mass is at 3:00 pm this Sunday. The Mass of Divine Mercy will be followed by the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Benediction.

HEAVENLY WINES PROJECT

One of the most popular auction items at our golf tournament is the Heavenly Wine collection, gifted by the Holy Cross Parish community. You are invited to participate by choosing wine to purchase with a price from $15 to $25.  Volunteers are in the back of the Church after all Masses to provide you with information.

Update April 14, 2022

Easter Wishes

This year Spring is in full force as we are celebrating Holy Week and Easter. Winter to spring brings change, new life, and transformation.
We need that transformation in our lives too. We who believe in the resurrection and trust in God’s power to transform death into life are summoned to be agents of transformation and healing for others. By God’s grace, may we ever more witness to and participate in God’s ongoing transformation of all in need, of ourselves and our world.

Christ is risen!
Happy Easter!

Update March 25, 2022

UPDATE re SUPPORT OF UKRAINE REFUGEES

Once again, our Holy Cross Community is stepping up to the plate and giving monetary aid to the Ukraine people that are arriving daily into Poland.  To date, your continued generosity to this cause has brought in a total of $30,837. Thank you!

As I mentioned last week, the two women, Svitlana and Ludmila, along with their children, have been living in the apartment sponsored by our parishioners.  This week they have received their Polish SIN numbers and on Monday their children will begin attending the local school in Zory. To generate some money, Svitlana and Ludmila are going to make and sell their home-made pierogis . . . unfortunately, they are not able to take orders from Canada!

Now we are making arrangements to sponsor accommodation for another group of refugees in Poland.  This means that we need to put aside $15,000 to cover the cost of these two apartments, as well as the cost of living for the people staying in them.

Whatever we collect over this amount will be sent directly to the Salvatorian Parishes in the Western Ukraine. They are supporting local shelters for the refugees and need to purchase basic equipment such as mattresses, washing machines, stoves, etc.  They have also been helping to purchase and transport medical equipment greatly needed for their local hospitals.

There are a variety of opportunities to help those in need during this difficult time.  At Holy Cross Parish, we will continue to pray for these refugees and to support them as much as we are able.

SYNOD
Archbishop Michael Miller has joined his voice to that of Pope Francis’, inviting “the universal Church” including the local archdiocese of Vancouver, “into the path of Synodality, ‘the path that God expects from the Church of the third millennium.’ Archbishop Miller and Pope Francis are calling “the People of God to …participate in this opportunity” to actively seek the Lord Jesus together, in the heart of the Church, as He breathes on us the Holy Spirit and calls us to renewal. As pastor, I extend this “wonderful…invitation” of the faithful to share their voices in this “process of consultation that has already started with the inauguration of the Synod of Bishops on Synodality.” If you wish to volunteer to participate in an online Holy Cross discussion group called “Conversation Circles”, there will be a sign-up sheet at the back of the church. Please provide your email address, which will only be used to link you to the Conversation Circles. Given the limited number of facilitators that we have, the sign-up sheet will be filled if and when 40 people sign up. If you wish to share your voice and want parish updates sent to your email, but cannot commit to a 65 minute session, please indicate this on the sign-up sheet, checking off the box that says, “Updates only”. If you want to participate individually, and do not want any updates, follow this link to anonymously to share your thoughts: https://secure.rcav.org/synod-submissions-individuals/, or you can fill out the response sheet which will be provided in the back of the church; and place this in the Synod feedback box.  The official Synod prayer is given at https://rcav.org/synod.

The questions which the Catholic Church is pondering are found on the prayer cards at the back of our church or online for those wishing to provide feedback individually https://secure.rcav.org/synod-submissions-individuals/. We encourage prayerful reflection before formulating your succinct responses.

More detailed information will be provided in the upcoming bulletin and by personal email to those who volunteer to participate in the Synodal Conversation Circles.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME THIS WEEKEND

SUPPORT OF UKRAINE REFUGEES

Many parishioners have expressed their concern and willingness to help the people in the Ukraine. Fr. Chris, through his contact in Poland, has found a way to directly support a group of women and children who fled the war zone in the Ukraine. As a Parish Community, we would be financing their accommodation (apartment, media, etc.) as long as it is necessary, for up to six months. Approximate monthly cost will be $1,000 per month. If you would like to support this “cause”, please put your donation into an envelope clearly marked “Ukraine”. You may put it into the collection basket or drop it off at the parish office. Please note – we will NOT be able to issue a tax receipt for this donation.

COVID REQUIREMENTS UPDATE

As of Friday, March 11, 2022, we no longer have capacity restrictions on worship services. All of our worship services can proceed at 100% capacity and there are no longer any requirements for vaccination verification. The requirement for everyone to wear a mask has also been removed.

Update March 4, 2022

A PRAYER FOR PEACE IN UKRAINE

Development and Peace appeals and prays for peace in Ukraine and calls the faithful to stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. As an organization committed to justice and peace, we strongly condemn all acts of military aggression.

In a video message posted on the morning Russian troops attacked, Tetiana Stawnychy, president of Caritas Ukraine, said “It’s hard to believe in the 21st century that we were waking up to the sounds of explosions and of air raid sirens….”

In the coming days, large numbers of people will likely end up displaced, needing help with meeting their basic needs. We have therefore made an immediate allocation of $75,000 to help with the provision of food, shelter, medical care and transport to safe locations. In addition, we ask for your solidarity and support to help us respond to the needs on the ground. Last but not least, thank you for joining us in praying for peace.

MARY’S WAY OF THE CROSS BOOKLETS

During the season of Lent, we are encouraged to pray and meditate on the Way of the Cross.  Please help yourself to the booklets titled Mary’s Way of the Cross available at the back of the Church (at no charge) to help you in your private prayer and meditation on the Stations of the Cross.  These booklets help us see through Mary’s eyes what Jesus was going through on the way to Cavalry.

SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEK

The second collection this week is for St. Joseph’s Society. This collection supports priests in their retirement years.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

The Stations of the Cross will be at 7:00 pm every Friday during Lent. There will be no confessions on Friday evenings.

FORMED.ORG AND LENT

Formed.org provides the very best Catholic content of movies, children’s programs, eBooks, audio, and faith studies direct to your browser, mobile or connected device. There are some excellent resources for Lent.

For adults:  “A Lenten Encounter with Mercy” a series of five videos.

For children:  “Lent with Brother Francis” a four part series of short videos.

PEN PALS PROGRAM

We would like to introduce a new program at our parish that pairs parishioners together as pen pals to correspond with each other by either letter or by e-mail. The aim of this program is to pair people together to foster a connection between parishioners to make a new friend or simply just connect with someone else and get to know one another. If there are any seniors in your family who you think would like to join, it would be great to inform them about this opportunity too. Before joining, it would also be necessary to complete a training session. If you have any further inquiries and would like to join this program, you can contact Veronica at veronikalewis11@gmail.com.

TAX RECEIPTS

This is the last weekend that your 2021 tax receipts will be available at the back of the Church for pickup.  Starting next week, we will be mailing your receipts.  You will receive a receipt(s) for your regular envelope donations as well as your preauthorized, online and Project Advance donations.

COFFEE AFTER MASS

Have you ever thought of volunteering at Church, but were reluctant because of your busy schedule? Well, maybe we have a solution! Would you be willing to give a bit of time before and after Sunday Mass once a month to prepare and serve coffee, tea and some treats to other parishioners? We would like to start this welcoming initiative in our parish after the 8am, 10am, and 12pm Masses in the near future but we need your help. Helping after Mass will be a great way to meet other parishioners and will help rebuild a sense of ‘community’ at Holy Cross. If you are interested, please call Makiko Morelli at 778-938-3244 or email mymorelli@hotmail.com for more information.

Formed.org is essentially a Netflix for Catholics.  It is run by the Augustine Institute and provides videos, books and audio talks for children, teens and adults. There is also a faith formation series.  All parishioners will have free unlimited access to this program.

FORMED.org

The Parish Council will be making a decision at their next meeting as to whether to renew our formed.org subscription. If you are using this website and would like the parish to continue our subscription, please email our parish office at parish.hcb@rcav.org.

SYNOD CARDS

The Holy Father has called a Synod in Rome in which we are invited to listen to one another and to grow as a parish, as a diocese, and as the Church around the world. The Synod will begin this year, and in support of this, at the back of the Church you will find the Synod cards. You are encouraged to take them home, as these cards give examples of different ways to encourage conversations about important issues in the Church today.  Hopefully, this will encourage us to listen better and to participate in authentic dialogue with one another.

More information will be coming your way soon on how to make the Synod a real opportunity for growth in our parish and community.

Thank you for your generous response to Project Advance 2021!  We collected $103,673.  Since our archdiocesan goal was lowered for this year, $56,672 stays in our parish. As previously mentioned, this money will go towards:

  • Replacement of the boiler in the church ($30,000)
  • Renewing the subscription to formed.org for our parishioners ($2,000)
  • Rebuilding or seismic upgrade of our elementary school

FATHER NORMAN BIRCH

We are saddened to let you know that Father Norman Birch died on January 9, 2022 at the age of 91 years after a month in hospital with fluid in his lungs.  Prayers will be held at Saint Paul’s Parish, Richmond on Tuesday January 18, 2022 and the Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday January 19, 2022 at Holy Rosary Cathedral at 10:00 am.  Father Norman was the Assistant Pastor to Father Tom Shields at Holy Cross from approx. 1972 to 1974 and was also the Chaplain for Simon Fraser University during that time.  Please pray for Father Norman and all the other priests who have served Holy Cross Parish over the years.

Two in-person prayer services co-led by Archbishop Miller will be live-streamed:

Jan 19, Wed, 3:30pm at John Paul II Pastoral centre (primarily for internal staff) www.rcav.org/wpcu2022

Update January 7, 2022

SHARE CHRISTMAS

This coming Sunday, we are liturgically ending the Christmas season with the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord.  During this period, we not only celebrated the joyful birth of Jesus and events following this, but also tried to show and share the love He brought into the world with others.  An example of this was our Share Christmas donation of $10,415.17 to The Missionaries of Charity. These funds will support their mission of serving the needy in the East Downtown area.  This was acknowledged by the Sisters with a beautiful card and letter thanking our parishioners for their generosity and ongoing support.

2022 ENVELOPES

Many of you have noticed that your 2022 envelope number has changed.  If you had a 2021 envelope number of 672 and higher, your 2022 envelope number is a lower number.  This is because more parishioners are donating online and do not want paper envelopes.  By moving many envelope numbers up, this means that we need to order fewer envelope boxes and save the costs and the paper.  Of course, if you wish to have a 2022 envelope box, please contact the Parish office and we will gladly give you one.

Given all the changes in envelope numbers, please do not use your 2021 envelopes.  Please write your name and address on your envelopes for the first few weeks of 2022 so that we can make sure we have the correct information.  Even if you do not have an envelope number, your donations will be tracked under your name and you will receive a tax receipt.
