Update September 25, 2020

Dear Parishioners,

I hope you and your families are all doing well since my last message to you on June 26, 2020.

In usual conversations, the question would be asked: “So, what’s new”?  Perhaps our response could be:  “New? …nothing really”, or “same old, same old”.  Truly, both answers would be correct.  We are still experiencing the impact of Covid-19;  we are still asked to maintain social distancing; we are still wearing masks, we are still asked to socialize within our “bubble” of no more than 6 people; we are still restricted to a maximum of 50 people attending any Mass or Church Celebration, etc. etc.

A “new” thing we are experiencing is the change of seasons. This week, we have officially finished the summer season and are now heading into the fall season.  Since September 8, we are back to our regular routine at Holy Cross.  Well . . .not really, considering that we still cannot attend Mass in big numbers; there was no Salmon BBQ; and the majority of our parish groups and programs cannot resume their activities in the same format as before.  However, with the reopening of Holy Cross School, it seems much more back to “normal”.

This Saturday, we are going to celebrate the First Holy Communion of the Grade 3 students from our School, which is usually celebrated the last Saturday of April.  The students will be divided into two groups and will be attending only with their parents.  Then on October 17, First Holy Communion will be celebrated for our PREP students in the same way.

We have noticed that there is a growing demand to attend Sunday Masses.  To be able to accommodate more parishioners, we are considering the possibility of adding two more weekend Masses and consequently changing our Weekend Mass Schedule.  Most probably, we would have two Masses on Saturday evening at 4.00 pm and 5.30 pm. and, on Sunday the Masses would be at 8.00 am; 9.30 am; 11.00 am and 12.30 pm. The evening Mass will be at 5.00 pm instead of 7.30 pm.  This change to the time of the Sunday evening Mass has resulted from people registering and not showing up – thus leaving few in attendance.   Please remember…these changes will happen no earlier than the Thanksgiving weekend and they will be indicated when you register for Mass on our website.   ALSO, THIS SCHEDULE WOULD ONLY BE IN EFFECT DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.  Fr. Tomas and I are hoping that with these mass-time changes and the addition of two more masses, it will help to provide a wider window to allow more people to attend.  However, all the faithful of our Archdiocese remain dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday.  Please . . . we ask that you not come to Church if you are not feeling well, or if you are not yet comfortable or don’t feel safe attending.

I welcome Fr. Tomasz Staruzyk, S.D.S. as the new Assistant Pastor here at Holy Cross.  He was born & raised in Poland, where his parents, 2 brothers & 1 sister still reside.  At the age of 19, he entered the Seminary of the Salvatorian Fathers of the Divine Savior in Poland and in 2003 his ordination took place.  He worked as an Assistant Pastor and, 4 years later in 2007, he was transferred to Brooklyn, New York, to serve as Assistant Pastor.  In 2009, he went back to Poland, where for the past 4 years he was Pastor in Mikolow.  On August 24, 2020, Fr. Tomas arrived in Vancouver and, after 2 weeks of self-isolation, he began his new assignment at our Parish.  By the way. . . .he does speak and understand English!!

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Chris Pastuszka, SDS

Pastor
